Macaron Madness!

Melbournians have been mad about Macarons for the past few years so there's no surprise that you can now find them anywhere. So let's talk about Macarons..

Little Feat Macarons

I must have heard of Little Feat from somewhere on the Twitterverse and since I love Macarons so much, I was aptly there in the first week of opening. Taking over half the space of Guava Bean, a tiny cafe on Russell St, it displays a variety of pretty and colourful Macarons and boxes to package them in. It was only just 9am, too early for desserts, however I bought a box of 12 to sample later on that afternoon.

(1) Cookies & Cream, Mango Magic, Peace-tachio
(2) Cheery Ripe, Tim Tam Tease, White Choc Mac
(3) Green Tea, Blue Currant, White Choc Mac
(4) Caramel Craving, Espresso, Chocolate Haze

If a specialty Macaron shop opens, I expect their Macarons to be of high quality with feet formed around the base of the Macaron shell, a delicately crisp shell, a little chewy on the inside, a smooth surface and the perfect ratio of filling sandwiched between the Macaron shells. Many cafes and shops sell Macarons these days so to open up a shop dedicated purely to Macarons, they pretty much have to be awesome.

This is where Little Feat Macarons fell short for me. A few of the flavours I had were great and spot on - those being the Caramel Craving, Cherry Ripe and Espresso. The rest of the flavours were hugely disappointing. The White Choc Mac Macaron, which to my dismay I had doubled up on because they sounded delicious, lacked any flavour other than Almond Meal and was extremely sweet. The Green Tea Macaron tasted like an artificial green tea candy I used to buy from Asian groceries. No distinct Macha flavour to be found which was a real shame as I'm a fan of Macha. Apart from that, the texture of majority of the Macarons were too dry, crumbly and had grainy surfaces. I found some even had air pockets. Perhaps I experienced an off batch and normally they aren't like that, but seeing as majority of the Macarons' quality were off, I won't be coming back.

Macarons: 5/10
Cost: ~ $2.50 per Macaron
Will I return? No, poor quality

?, Cookies n Cream, Short Mac, Violet and Cassis & Strawberries and Cream

I have previously had Macarons from Cacao before but not for a while. I was lucky enough to receive a box of Cacao Macarons from a friend, while out to coffee, as she knew I loved my sweets. Cacao has many locations throughout Melbourne and it seems like a chain of cafes but that does not deteriorate the quality of their fine Macarons. Their flavours are intense and accurate while the texture seems to be the best compared to Little Feat and La Belle Miette (sometimes LBM Macarons are too soft/mushy inside). The flavours I've liked best time after time are the Dark Chocolate, Jam & Cream Lamington (Really tastes like a lamington yum!), Lemon, Raspberry Cream, Salted Caramel, Strawberries & Cream and Violet & Cassis. All the other flavours are great as well, although I haven't tried Licorice yet due to my dislike of licorice. Cacao would be one of my picks to satiate your Macaron cravings.

Macarons: 9/10
Cost: I buy them in packs so generally >$2.50 per Macaron
Will I return? Yes

La Belle Miette

I'm a fan of La Belle Miette Macarons and it's not just because the shop on Hardware Lane is so wonderfully french and pretty. The Macarons are some of the best I've had in Melbourne and the flavour combinations are hard to beat. The Macarons' textures and the flavours are usually spot on. I have bought boxes as gifts and received only praises of how delicious they all were. My favourites are 72% Cocoa Single Origin Chocolate, Caramel a la Fleur de Sel, Violet & Blueberry & Hazelnut Belle Miette. I love how some even have a spot of flavoured jam on the inside for a burst of extra flavour and make it that much more yummy.

Macarons: 9/10
Cost: $2.50 - $2.80 per Macaron

What do you think? Are there any other great Macaron makers in Melbourne that I haven't tried yet?

  2. I tried La Belle Miette for the first time last week, bought a box of 12 different ones for my Mum's birthday. I'm not hugely into the macaron craze but I was very, very impressed with these ones! I have to go back because I have no idea what flavours they were!

    1. Haha I know what you mean - I had the Violet & Blueberry Macaron and didn't know what flavour it was, only that it was so tasty at that time.

  3. Ohhh what a short sweet summary!

Regarding Little Feat -- perhaps you may have heard of it partly from our blog as we were the first to review it. http://momoandcoco.wordpress.com/irresistibles-from-cafesspecialty-boutiques/

We would concur with you on all the above ratings. :) We would recommend you try Macarons Fine Patisserie too.

    1. Haha! There are pros and cons to working in the city. Sometimes I wish I worked in the suburbs so I could get some extra shut-eye.
